Beautiful stuffed Sumatra rooster with beautiful green sheen. The rooster is mounted on a handmade black coated pedestal.
There was much speculation in the past as to their origin. Some claimed they were a sub-race of the jungle fowl before mixing with other breeds. Others believed it was a cross between Gallus varius, green jungle grouse or even that it could be a pheasant cross. What is clear is that the breed originated in Sumatra (Sunda Islands) and is one of the older poultry breeds there.
Under the name Ayam Sumatra, the Sumatras were used for cockfighting. Around 1850 they were imported to the United States, where they quickly gained popularity due to their intense green sheen and exotic character. After cockfighting lost popularity with this breed, people began breeding them for show. In 1883, they were standardized in America and included in the ASP (American Standard of Perfection). Around the same time they were introduced in Germany and around 1900 in Great Britain, after which other European countries followed. In the Netherlands the bantam variety has been bred, both in black and blue, but given their numbers this is currently a rare sight.
