Otto Wernicke, a German immigrant to America, began producing stackable cabinets in his furniture workshop in 1893. In 1900 his business was acquired by the Globe Files Company, a specialized office furniture company, which led to the creation of the new company called The Globe Wernicke Company. In addition to manufacturing in the United States, these cabinets were also manufactured under license in London. The innovative design of the modular bookcase proved a great success, and Globe Wernicke cabinets became highly sought after, especially in libraries and offices. They enjoyed considerable popularity with law firms, resulting in the nickname "Barrister bookcase.
