Ton sponge on pedestal -Xestospongia testudinaria Large Xestospongia testudinaria barrel sponge on black turned wooden pedestal Rare and authentic Xestospongia testudinaria, also called giant sponge, is a species of sponge from the class Demos sponges, order Haplosclerida and family Petrosiidae. This large sponge can grow more than 2 meters high. 

Its shape is reminiscent of a barrel. It lives in the warm waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean, on coral reefs, between 2 and 50 meters deep. The barrel sponge is massive and barrel-shaped, with a large, rough cavity in the middle. The color is variable, it can be brown, gray, pink or pinkish purple, with the inside sometimes being lighter, creamy or grayish. Large dark vertical spots are usually present on the outer vertical ridges. The consistency is hard but not very compressible, brittle and fragile.
