Giant Apollo Torso. Marble replica.

The Gaddi Torso is an Hellenistic artwork from the 2nd century B.C, kept in the Classical Sculpture Room of the Uffizi Gallery (Florence).

Torso statues were very common in the XVIth century and many artists - such as Lorenzo Ghiberti, Rosso Fiorentino and Michelangelo - were inspired by its muscles and shape : handcrafted by the artists of Galleria Romanelli, this work emphasizes the study of anatomy and muscles thanks to the particular pose known as "contrapposto". Art historians think that the Gaddi Torso actually represented a centaur. The sculpture was part of group representing the consequences of love at various stages of human life.
